Delight in making homemade soft pretzels that are warm, chewy, and customizable with a variety of toppings.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • Coarse sea salt for topping
  • Melted butter (optional for brushing)
  • Optional: parmesan cheese, sesame seeds, or cinnamon sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough by combining warm water, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl; let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy. Add salt and gradually mix in the flour until a soft dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add more flour if too sticky.
  3. Let the dough rise in a greased bowl, covered with a towel, in a warm area for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  4. Shape the pretzels by preheating the oven to 450°F (232°C), punching down the risen dough, and dividing it into 8 equal pieces; roll each piece into a 24-inch rope and shape into a pretzel.
  5. Prepare the baking soda bath by mixing baking soda with boiling water, then carefully drop each pretzel into the bath for about 30 seconds.
  6. Bake the pretzels on a greased baking sheet, brushing with melted butter and sprinkling with coarse salt if desired, for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Enjoy the pretzels warm, plain, or with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Ensure the water temperature is right for yeast activation and feel free to experiment with various toppings for flavor.
