Create delightful and customizable Halloween cookies that are perfect for parties, school events, or home enjoyment.

Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • Royal icing (see below for preparation)
  • Food coloring
  • Sprinkles
  • Gel pens (edible)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cookie Dough: In a bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. In another large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and mix in the vanilla (and almond extract if using). Gradually blend the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture until well combined.
  2. Bake the Sugar Cookies: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use Halloween-shaped cookie cutters to cut out your cookies. Place the cookies on ungreased baking sheets and bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden at the edges. Let cool completely on wire racks.
  3. Prepare Royal Icing: While the cookies cool, make the royal icing. In a mixing bowl, combine powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water. Beat until the mixture holds stiff peaks. Divide the icing into separate bowls based on how many colors you want to use and add food coloring to each.
  4. Decorate the Cookies: Transfer the colored icing into piping bags. Decorate the cookies as desired, starting with outlines and then filling in with more icing. Be creative with sprinkles and additional decorations.
  5. Let It Dry: Once decorated, allow the cookies to sit at room temperature until the icing is completely dry. This may take several hours or overnight, depending on the thickness of the icing.

Notes

For cleaner cookie shapes, chill the dough before cutting. Ensure royal icing holds its shape but is still spreadable. Store cookies in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
