Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 2/3 cup + 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup + 1 tablespoon semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup Dutch-processed cocoa powder (sifted)
  • 3/4 cup black cocoa powder (sifted)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup hot coffee (or hot water)
  • 3/4 cup black cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan with salt over medium heat. Whisk in the heavy cream and sugar until nearly boiling (about 7-8 minutes).
  2. Remove from heat and stir in the chocolate chips until melted and smooth.
  3. Combine the cocoa powders, flour, baking soda, and salt in a bowl and whisk until well mixed.
  4. Whisk together the oil and sugar in another bowl, then add buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.
  5. Slowly stream the hot chocolate mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until combined.
  6. Whisk the hot coffee with the remaining cocoa powder until lump-free, then fold into the batter.
  7. Evenly distribute the batter into three prepared 6-inch cake pans.
  8. Bake at 350°F (180°C) for 25 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Frost once the cake layers are completely cooled.
  10. Serve and enjoy your Ultra Moist Black Velvet Cake!

Notes

Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for the best results. Avoid overmixing to keep the cake light and fluffy.
