A delightful minimalist Halloween cake that’s fun to create and beautiful to display, perfect for spooky celebrations.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (orange and black)
  • Halloween-themed sprinkles
  • Fondant decorations or edible markers (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl until well combined.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix on medium speed until well blended.
  4. Incorporate the boiling water into the batter and mix until smooth.
  5. Bake the cakes in the prepared pans for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  6. Prepare the frosting by beating the softened butter until creamy, then adding powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  7. Assemble the cake by placing one cake layer on a serving plate, frosting with orange frosting, and adding the second layer on top.
  8. Frost the entire cake with a crumb coat and chill for 30 minutes.
  9. Apply a second, thicker layer of frosting over the chilled cake.
  10. Decorate the cake with Halloween-themed sprinkles and fondant decorations as desired.

Notes

Ensure room temperature ingredients for a smoother batter and avoid overmixing to keep the cake fluffy.
